River Bluff High School
Gilbert High School
The River Bluff Gators rolled into Gilbert, America Friday night, riding high from a victory last week over Lugoff-Elgin. Gilbert, however, marched their first possession right down the field and into the end zone and never looked back. The Indians, improving to 3-0 on the season, looked solid in all facets of the game, frustrating the Gators with an attacking defense and keeping them on their heels with a well-balanced offense.
Gilbert dominated almost every statistical category for the evening, out-gaining the Gators in total offense 552 yards in 70 plays to 129 yards in 43 plays. Penalties plagued the Gators as well as they gave up 85 yards on 11 flags on a night that saw lots of yellow on the field for both teams.
A bright spot for River Bluff was their kickoff return game, in which the Gators racked up 205 yards on 7 returns. Antonio Gantt led the way for RB with 5 returns for 160 yards, one of which was an 85-yard touchdown run.
The kicking game was also a positive for the Gators, with Braden Walker averaging just under 44 yards per punt and Coltin Hallman averaging 50 yards per kickoff. Although he came up short on a 40-yard field goal attempt, Hallman also added 2 extra points.
The 1-2 Gators are back home in The Swamp next Friday, September 8th at 7:30 PM, taking on Dreher High School. With lots of football left to play in this young season, the Gators will look to bounce back against the Blue Devils and even up their record for the year.
Gilbert's DeAndre Cook scored on a 6-yard TD run. Tanner Watson followed it with a PAT. Then, Manny Bright carried it in to the end zone on a 12-yard run and Watson added the PAT to give Gilbert a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
River Bluff got on the board first in the second quarter with a safety, making the score 14-2. Gilbert responded with a safety of their own, increasing their lead to 16-2. Cooked scored again for the Indians on a 2-yard run and Watson added the PAT, giving the Indians a solid 23-2 lead. The Gators' Antonio Gantt took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for the score and Coltin Hallman tacked on the PAT, closing the gap to 23-9. Gilbert closed out the 3rd quarter with yet another touchdown, this time on a pass from Josh Strickland to Peyton Loper. Tanner's extra point was good again, and the Indians headed into the half with a commanding 30-9 lead.
The only score in the 3rd came off of Cody Temples' touchdown run of 5 yards for the Indians. Watson added the PAT to increase Gilbert's lead to 37-9.
Gilbert got their last score from a 47-yard touchdown toss from Strickland to Loper. Watson's extra point topped off the Indians' scoring at 44. River Bluff added a touchdown off the feet of Braden Walker and Hallman added the PAT pushing the Gators score to 16. When the clock reached zeroes, Gilbert walked away with an impressive 44-16 win over the visiting Gators from River Bluff.
