Game Recap

The Gators dropped a tough game to Dreher Friday night in The Swamp. After leading for most of the game, River Bluff couldn’t stop Dreher on their final drive, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with under two minutes remaining. Unable to put together a last minute drive, the Gators fall to 1-3 on the year.

River Bluff, donned in all-black uniforms to pay tribute to the black uniforms of many in our military in the Middle East, played an inspired game, greatly improving over last week’s performance against Gilbert. Turnovers and penalties proved too difficult to overcome for the Gators, though, and they dropped a close one on Military Appreciation Night in The Swamp to Dreher, who improve to 2-1 on the season, 17-14.

Weston rushed for 96 yards and had a 59-yard breakaway that led to the Gators first score. He accounted for 135 all-purpose yards. Gantt added 67 yards and Walker 52 as the Gator offense generated 233 total rushing yards on the night. The Gators’ defense had a decent night with Lawson Danley leading all tacklers with 10 total tackles.

Game Summary

Dreher jumped out to an early lead on Hunter Mullinax’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Dane Hamilton. Pierce Myrick’s kick was good, giving the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead.River Bluff responded with a drive of their own and evened the game at 7-7 with a Jalen Weston 6-yard run and Coltin Hallman extra point.

The Gators tacked on another score when Antonio Gantt rumbled into the end zone from 20 yards out. Hallman added the extra point, giving the Gators a 14-7 lead. That’s where the score stood at the half.

Both teams came out of their respective locker rooms after the half and had obviously made adjustments, stifling each other’s offenses with tough defensive stands on both sides. The third quarter saw a back and forth battle with the only score coming from a Myrick 31-yard field goal for Dreher, closing the gap for the the Blue Devils to 14-10.

The beginning of the 4th quarter saw more of the tough defensive stands that prevailed in the 3rd. River Bluff finally put together an impressive drive, one that could have put the game strongly in their favor, but fumbled the ball while surging inside the Blue Devils’ 30 yard line. Dreher took the ball after recovering the turnover and drove methodically down the field, chewing up yardage and the clock, and eventually scored inside the 2:00 mark when Jay Washington scampered in from the River Bluff 32. The Gators were unable to put a drive together, and Dreher took the victory 17-14.
