This summer, Coach Derek Gomez, along with 100 Coaches from around the nation, participated in the United States Track and Field Association’s continuing education course for Cross Country Coaches. Upon conclusion of the course and successful completion of the accompanying exam, Coach Gomez earned the title of USATF Certified Cross Country Specialist. USATF Coaching Education presented a course specific to the discipline of cross country. Theories that were taught included periodization training for the cross country season, adapted from USATF Legend Coach, Dr. Joe Vigil, in addition to team-building strategies and long term athlete development for the endurance runner.
Coach Gomez has his USATF Level One Track & Field Certification and is currently working on his USATF Level Two Certification in Endurance.
Instructors were Scott Christensen and Thom Hunt. One of the country’s top high school coaches, Christensen has led Stillwater High School to 13 state titles and multiple national top 10 HS rankings. He also has served USATF’s delegations at the 2003 and 2008 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. A former prolific long-distance runner and 10k American record holder, Hunt has been coaching for 20 years. He ran for Team USATF at IAAF Cross Country Championships in 1976, 1977, 1981 and 1983, and also served on teams in 2008, 2011, and 2015.
