As one of River Bluff’s most successful athletic programs, Gator Wrestling is gearing up to grapple through the upcoming 2020-21 season. The Gators’ success is due in large part to the strong work ethic program-wide. First-year Head Coach Joe Cummings sees no reason why this year’s team will be no different. “We have a good group of hard-working kids. We look forward to having the opportunity to compete. Our goals are to stay healthy and compete as well as we can in every match.”
As to the make-up of the team, Cummings mentions, “Our team has a good split of young guys and upperclassmen.” With that balance, Cummings feels confident that his squad will be competitive. He states, “Overall we have a solid group of kids that will give their all when they’re on the mat.”
Leading the way for the Gators are five state qualifiers from last year: Jack Brown, William Rogers, Quinton Boyle, and Michael Rogers. That experience and leadership will help propel the Gators through a tough region and hopefully into the playoffs. It will also benefit the younger wrestlers looking to contribute to the team’s success.
River Bluff will be hosting nine matches this season, six of which are tri-matches involving three teams. fans will have an opportunity to see the Gators wrestle against some of the best teams around our state. While COVID19 restrictions will still be in place, fans are invited to come out for some exciting wrestling action this year. Cummings says his guys love that home-crowd backing, adding, “We appreciate all of the support from our community and we hope to see Gator Nation out at some of our matches.”
Coach Cummings and his River Bluff wrestlers will kick off the regular season at Lexington on December 17th and will return home for their first home match – a tri-match – on the 19th.
